High-risk receivables — when standard collection stops working
An international B2B receivable can become a problem long before it reaches a lawyer or court. When standard collection attempts don't deliver results, the receivable enters a phase where a decision has to be made — write it off, or try once more, differently.
This page explains what a high-risk receivable is, how to recognise the signs and when it's worth starting a collection process.
What is a high-risk receivable
A high-risk receivable is one where standard collection attempts have stopped working. It doesn't mean the receivable can't be collected — just that a different approach is needed from the one used so far.
A high-risk receivable usually looks like this:
- The debtor doesn't respond to reminders
- The receivable is more than 6 months old
- Standard communication isn't working
- A write-off or legal action is approaching
Signs that a receivable is high-risk
Reminders go unanswered
Repeated emails and reminders don't change anything anymore. The debtor doesn't respond, or responds without a concrete payment plan.
The debtor keeps postponing payment
The debtor doesn't refuse to pay, but keeps postponing — new deadlines, new promises, new excuses.
The receivable is more than 6 months old
The older the receivable, the harder it is to collect. After 6 months, the likelihood of collection drops significantly.
A write-off decision is approaching
If you're considering a write-off or legal action, that's a sign the receivable has entered a phase where a different approach is needed.
Is this your case?

- Standard collection attempts haven't worked
- The receivable is becoming high-risk
- A write-off or legal action is approaching
- You want an individual approach, not mass collection

When a receivable isn't for us
We're not the right fit for every case. We don't handle:

- Cases where the debtor is actively communicating and has a payment plan
- Legal action (lawsuits, enforcement)
What you can do next
If you have a receivable of €20,000 or more and standard collection attempts haven't worked — it's worth considering a step most don't try.
It's not the legal route. It's not mass collection. It's an individual approach that starts with analysis, not with a reminder.
